The pounding on the door bounced around the hall. Violet was in there. Her heartbeat was steady. The wind circled the corridor, and the door flew open.
âNice dramatics.â Tad strutted in, no longer surprised by the glossy-stark room.
âMutt, close the door behind you.â She waved her hand around in the air above her head.
Tad left the door open and crossed the shiny floor to the silk-robed witch. He peered at her. Interesting, he picked up on no fear from her. He wasnât an alpha, but the anger radiating off of him would upset most. He stood across from her on the edge of the orange circle that dominated the room.
âI donât get this sitting-on-the-floor thing.â
âVisual clutter.â She motioned for him to sit across from her on the other side of the circle. He reluctantly sat.
âHowâs this comfortable?â Tad sat in his borrowed scrub pants; heâd almost worn shorts today.
âI have no need for comfort. You came to talk to me about my aversion to furniture?â
âNo.â She knew why heâd come, of that he had no doubt.
âYouâre experiencing some side effects of the ward containing the visions and memories you retained?â
âI am.â He studied his pristine loafers.
âAnd you would like the offending feelings removed?â
âNo. I donât want the feelings removed. Iâm furious that I wasnât allowed to have them to begin with. Iâm questioning who I even am now.â
âThis isnât my story to tell.â Violet reached across the circle to touch his hand. He didnât flinch from her touch, but he didnât welcome it either. She pulled her hand back. It might not be her story to tell. But he wanted, no, needed it.
âYour mother and her friendâyou want to understand how they intertwined into your fatherâs pack? How they came to live with the enemy?â
Tad shifted in his seatâa clear signal he didnât like the word.
âTo most witches thatâs what they are: the enemy.â
âMy mother found love with my father, the alpha of the pack.â Something about their marriage never sat right with him.
Violet lifted her head. âWhy arenât you the alpha of the pack, mutt?â
âI was too young. Itâs not what I would have wanted, anyway.â
âOr your pack. They knew. They know what Lara is. Not all of them. Sheâs tried to keep it from so many. Itâs been told that a witch and a wolf would marry and that the war would end. But what the vision doesnât tell us is how. Or if the witches come out on top. There are a lot in the community that donât want the war to end if we canât see the victor. Thatâs why the two hid who they are. Why they bound your magic. And they were married before the war. Part of the cause, even. With your protection down, there would be those who would find you. Those who would attack to keep the status quo. Not only witches, but others. Trolls . . . even the fae donât want the war to pick up again.
He flinched.
âAh, you didnât understand.
